Is the only private, non-residential school for children and young adults with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities in Schuylkill County.
Was founded in November 1955 by Monsignor John E. Boyle of St. Patrick's Church Pottsville at 619 Mahantongo and was known as St. Joseph Day School.
Was renamed St. Joseph Center for Special Learning in 1985 in order to reflect an emphasis of a learning skills center rather than a day care facility. Moved to its one-level current site at 2075 W. Norwegian St. Pottsville in January 1989. Currently serves over 18 students of all religious beliefs, ethnic and economic backgrounds coming from 12 different school districts in Schuylkill County. Provides an educational, developmental and spiritual program for children and young adults ages 4 through 21. The basic curriculum is enhanced by the following services: speech and language therapy, a school nurse, occupational therapy, psychological evaluations, vocational-technical services, work experience program and sacramental preparation. Many students also benefit because of access to computers, the Internet, sensory integrated activities, and extracurricular programs and field trips.
Offers a state licensed adult habilitation program for those over the age of 21 who, due to functional level, are unable to join the workforce.
Has a fully ADA compliant, handicapped-accessible playground on site, which is used for recreation as well as therapeutic purposes.
Operates a student-run hot lunch program 5 days a week, where the students plan, shop, prepare, and serve all meals.
Became accredited by the prestigious Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in November 1999. Includes a staff of one principal, 2 teachers, 3 teacher assistants, a full-time development director and a group of dedicated volunteers and parents. Has an active Development Advisory Board and Parent Guild, whose members raise funds and promote community awareness. Has a budget of over $364,000 for 2006-2007 with the major source of annual funding coming from the Bishop's Annual Appeal. The remaining monies are derived from tuition, grants, fundraising, donations and Parish Assessments. Has a tuition assistance program available for eligible families. Has an advantageous student/teacher ratio of 8 to 1. Celebrated its Golden Jubilee on October 16, 2005, and continues to recognize this momentous milestone with the floral and garden based theme: "Celebrating Over Fifty Years of Nurturing God's Children." Maintains through its mission statement that Saint Joseph Center for Special Learning is a unique environment committed to guiding students to their full potential academically, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, while equipping them with the skills necessary for independent life. This is accomplished in a safe, loving environment emphasizing individuality and family values. |
