THE STORY OF ST. STEPHEN
Stephen was one of the first deacons of the early Church. Deacons were men chosen by the apostles to distribute funds and food to those in need.
Stephen's life teaches us about witness, forgiveness and death. He had the courage to speak out about what he believed in. But Stephen did more than just talk. He acted on his beliefs. As a deacon he served the needy, widows and orphans. He stood up to those who rejected Jesus. This was his witness: living a life of Christian love to the fullest.
Some people resented Stephen's preaching about Jesus. He was placed on trial and falsely accused. Stephen's words in court made his listeners furious. So they seized him, dragged him outside and stoned him to death. As he suffered through this torture, Stephen prayed to the Father, asking that God forgive those who were persecuting him, just as Jesus did for those who crucified him.
Without trust in God, Stephen could not have been strong as he faced death. He met his death with courage and trust in God. He met death forgiving his enemies.
Stephen was the first person to be killed for his faith in Jesus. He was the first martyr.
