Canoeing the Schuylkill River |
The
Schuylkill River has much to offer. It tells the story of a historical coal
mining community that was once the driving force behind the industrial revolution.
While exploring the Schuylkill River, structures once used in the transportation
of coal can still be seen in many areas. These remnants of the past along
with the beauty of the mountains, give way to both an educational and rewarding
experience. However, the by-product of coal mining continues to hinder the
potential of the Schuylkill River. Acid mine drainage continues to color
our water orange, increase acidity and coat the stream bed with iron sedimentation.
This has led many to believe that the Schuylkill River is a lost resource,
only good for disposing of waste. Perceptions need to change and citizens
need to reclaim what is theirs. With the efforts of local citizens and the
use of revitalizing technologies, we WILL reap the recreational benefits
of our river. We WILL see our children canoe, fish and wade in our river.
It is an attainable goal and Schuylkill County residents are the ones who
WILL achieve the water quality that was once present prior to our coal mining
legacy. So what are you waiting for? Join us and lets reclaim what is ours!
