Dear 2nd Graders, Parents and Visitors,

Welcome to the 2nd Grade!

Here's some information you'll need for the upcoming year. You may want to print this for reference at a later date.

For the most recent classroom news, scroll to the bottom of this page!

Supplies Needed:
For class each day, your child will need:

**2 or 3 sharpened pencils with erasers
**2 pocket folders (with bottom pockets)
**2 primary copybooks (order from school)
**1 12-inch ruler
**1 small box of crayons (no larger than a 24 pack, no markers or colored pencils please)
**1 zipper-type (no plastic boxes or cans please) pencil case to hold his/her crayons and pencils (helpful due to limited space in the desks)
**1 box of tissues (for classroom use throughout the school year)
**1 pair of child's scissors
**1 glue stick

Money
It would be helpful if all money be sent to school in a sealed envelope. Please make sure your child's name, grade and what the money is for is written on the outside of the envelope. Banking will be collected each Monday morning. Drink money is due each Thursday morning. If your child is absent on a day in which milk is ordered, please send his/her money to school with a brother, sister or a friend. If this is not possible, please leave a message to order the milk when you call the office to report that your child is sick.

Lateness/Absenteeism:
If your child is late or absent for school, in addition to notifying the school office, please send a note of explanation with your child when he/she returns to school. It would also be helpful, if there is a change in your normal routine, that you make me aware of it. For example, if your child rides the bus each day, but will be going home in the walker's line, I need to know this by way of a note.

Homework/Assignments:
Your child will be expected to copy his/her homework in a primary copybook each day, so that you know exactly what the assignments are for that day. Please make sure that you check to see that each item is completed. Please sign your name on the line under the last line of homework, after you have checked the homework assignments. This will show your son/daughter that you care about his/her work. Also, please initial each page of work in your child's books, after you have checked to make sure it is completed (for example, Religion, Math, Spelling, Phonics, etc. pages). Of course, you may also want to refer to the Homework Helpline.

Homework/Assignments and Absenteeism:
If your child is absent, we will make an effort to send his/her homework home, so that he/she will not be behind in any work. If there is no one in school to take the homework home, please pick it up in the office after 3:30 that afternoon.

Reading:
In order to help your child do better in all subjects, please encourage him/her to read often -- rather than watching television or playing video games. Our children need to read, and read more than they've been doing. Please encourage them to read with you whenever possible. You can use school books, readers, library books, magazines, newspapers, etc.

Yes/No Papers:
During the school year, I will be sending home "yes" "no" papers. Please fill in and sign each one, even if you are not interested in the item, so that I can obtain free materials for your child to use and enjoy in the classroom.

Concerns:
Please feel free to contact me, if you need to speak about your son/daughter. Please don't discuss any problems you have with another parent. Since we are both concerned about your son/daughter's progress, we need to work together to help him/her achieve his/her very best.

Suggestions:
Please make sure your child's name is on all valuables: sweaters, jackets, sweatshirts, school bags, lunch bags, gym clothes, etc.

It would be helpful if you would cover one of your child's books each night in the beginning of the school year.

If your child is bringing in a treat or snack for his/her birthday, it would be helpful if there could be one for each child and one that he/she could hand out him/herself. Please don't forget to send napkins as well.

If you are sending invitations to a birthday party, every child must get one. I ask you to refrain from having your child distribute them during class. Recess would be a better time to give them out.

A Glimpse of 2nd Grade . . .

Every year our 2nd grade students portray either the Saint they are named after, a Saint one of their parents are named after or one they studied on All Saint's Day.
Special Moments in 2nd Grade . . .

Our 2nd graders have been working hard this year. We've done many fun things so far. The time is passing too quickly.

Here are some of our special moments. We begin each day with our special class prayers and a patriotic song and, at least, one other fun song.

In Reading, we are learning about things in nature. We enjoy reading and read whenever we finish our classwork. A person from the Literacy Council visits our classroom each year and reads a special story to the class.

Many of our students did a great job in the school art fair.

We are practicing our French words and phrases. We've learned how to bless ourselves in French. We are currently learning the "Hail Mary" and have sung "Frere Jacques."

We dressed as special saints for our "All Saints Day" program. We had a treat with our 6th grade buddies in the afternoon.

We have enjoyed many educational presentations including Mr. Matz's "Fire Prevention" program, Mr. McSurdy's Indian Demonstration and the Academy of Natural Science program. We also enjoy the many fun student council activities.

We say a decade of the Rosary each day for World Peace.

We are doing fun activities with kindergarten and first grade on special monthly themes.
